Green funerals are becoming increasingly popular as people become more concerned about the environment. Some natural burial grounds have a building where an alternative funeral ceremony can be held while other
sites have nowhere undercover. In a situation such as this you may choose to hold the bespoke funeral ceremony at a different location beforehand. Alternatively the funeral ceremony may be held at the graveside.
The Association of Natural Burial Grounds has a list of natural burial grounds run by its members and outlines its codes of practice on its website (see 'Links' for contact details).
Only environmentally-friendly coffins and shrouds are acceptable at natural burial grounds. There are many coffins that satisfy this requirement including those made from willow, sea grass, banana leaf and cardboard as well as the ecopod which is made from recycled paper. It is also possible to use many of these coffins at the crematorium
